Comedy films bring joy, laughter and escapism to all those who seek it, and when film executives find the right script and the right director to govern a project, then making people laugh can be a monumental goldmine. As Dr. Evil expressed in Austin Powers, “Why make a trillion when we could make… a billion.” Here is a list of some of the highest grossing comedy films of all time:
1. Beverly Hills Cop (1984)
Eddie Murphy was the hottest and most unpredictable comic around when he landed the part of LAPD officer Axel Foley in this Box Office smash. His style was not dissimilar to the legendary Richard Pryor, and the public was intoxicated by the danger and the energy of his performance. The film grossed a whopping $234 million in the box office.
2. Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)
Robin Williams is the master character actor of his generation, moving seamlessly between a diversity of roles like a chameleon during his long career. In this caper, he takes on the identity of lovable nanny Mrs. Doubtfire, just so he can get close to his beloved children during the divorce from his wife. This film grossed over $219 million in the domestic box office.
3. Home Alone (1990)
Macauley Culkin took up the role of the plucky Kevin McCallister in this seminal 90's flick, who defended his homestead from bandits and found his way into the hearts and minds of an entire generation. The film was an unmitigated triumph making over $281 million.
4. Austin Powers 2: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)
Mike Myers, the man behind such cult comedy films as Wayne's World, made a killing in the box office with this second instalment in the Austin Powers series. Mike Myers showed his versatility playing a number of the characters on set, including the irrepressible Dr. Evil and Fat Bastard. It made over $205 million in domestic sales.
